I downloaded ProtonVPN (5.5.68.0) a few months ago via the Google Play Store and have been happily using it ‘anonymously’ as a Guest with no problem. I recently purchased a new Android device and this time I chose to download the same VPN (5.5.68.0) via F-Droid to maintain some privacy. However, there appears to be no option in the FOSS version of the app to use Proton VPN as a guest - I am told I have to sign-up with an actual email address. For a company claiming they are "Empowering you to choose a better internet where privacy is the default. Protect yourself online with... Proton VPN" (look to the right of this page), this decision astounds me. Assuming the error is not on my part, why is the purported FOSS version on F-Droid forcing users to give identifiable information (even if it’s only an email address and password), but the Google Android version does not?

On desktop, the submit a post page will load indefinitely without proceeding when connected with Proton. On mobile (using Boost for Lemmy), I always get "an unknown error occurred" when submitting anything to Lemmy. Anyone else having this issue?

https://torrentfreak.com/italy-approves-piracy-shield-vpn-dns-proposal-risk-of-prison-for-isps-intact-241001/

The new "Omnibus" law in italy tries to block piracy by basically creating a situation in which you will face jail time if you get caught watching an illegal streaming (or your IP does) and ISP and IP providers (they name VPN and DNS services) will face jail time too if they don't notify the authorities of "illegal activity" done by their users. E.g. if I watch a soccer streaming from a pirate site, apparently, my VPN provider (in this case, Proton) will have to notify the authorities that I am watching that pirated content. This is madness in so many ways, starting by the fact that the law implies that both my ISP and my VPN provider must spy my traffic to see if I am watching any illegal content. I wanted to know if Proton has anything to say about all of this for their Italian customers. How are you guys going to face this? Will you simply stop providing the service? Will you ignore the law because you are not an italian company? Or will you spy our traffic to see if we are watching a soccer game? I'm quite worried right now about the implications of this law to my privacy. Not because I pirate content but because the punishement for those who don't notify the authorities means that to avoid legal problems, services like Proton will have to actually read our traffic.

I have the "HOLIDAYS" calendar loaded for the US in the Proton Calendar app but Oct 14, Columbus Day isn't included. I know it's a contentious "holiday" but it's still listed as a Federal Holiday and should be included.

Hi. I would love to get notifications on GrapheneOS without any Google Play Services etc. or any MicroG or equivalent. (For ProtonMail) I have seen posts that indicate that the Proton team is aware of this, and wanted to implement it (and has on their other apps) but is there any way to either tell them that this is desired, or make a poll or something? I self host several things including ntfy, so is there any way to use that for notifications? Does Proton Mail have an API that I could use to programmatically send notifications?

I just found out that Pass has offline mode from a recent email they sent and found language saying the same in the browser extension (see below). Proton is blocked on my work's network for some reason so as far as Proton is concerned I'm "offline", but I still can't access the credentials stored in the browser extension when I'm at work. Can someone help explain? - Quick offline access to your login data: Access your stored passwords and notes in Pass from wherever you are, even when you don’t have internet connection. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/proton-pass/ And this is from their recent email ![](https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/65ce1091-ed5e-4e03-9975-d5cf609ecc27.png)

from the team: --------- Hi everyone, We’re happy to share that Proton Mail on iOS now supports dynamic font sizes. Here’s how it works: - Select your preferred font size in the iOS settings menu > Display & Brightness > Text Size - Open the Proton Mail app. The app now uses your preferred font size. - Goodbye eye strain You can also add **text size** to your iOS Control Center to access it anytime. When I connected to the "fastest server" this morning, it appeared at first to connect me to a US server in Chicago. Then I visited a sports site and got the European version. Odd. So I went to check browserleaks, and lo and behold, for some reason or another I was in Czechia (is it still called the Czech Republic?). Anyway, I tried a few others in that range and they all go there. Also, I've mentioned in a couple places before, but various US-TX servers also act like they're in Europe, even though they do initially appear to be in the US, because even though browserleaks shows the Texas ones as a US IP, the network shows some European company so some sites treat them like Europe.

I'm trying to figure out how to save a batch of emails, after I sort various emails into various folders. Assume I have all emails I sent to Smith, in a specific year, moved to folders with names like SMITH-SENT-2022, SMITH-SENT-2023, etc, and all emails I received from Smith in a separate set, sorted by year. Can I transfer all of the emails in any single specific folder, to some sort of file I can work with, either in EML code (for Outlook), or as pdf, txt, doc, or any other common format. And, can I keep the readable non-encrypted names of those emails as they are, when I open the Proton email program and read them? BTW, I downloaded and tried the "Export" tool, but I could only get a set of over 1000 EML files, totally unsorted, with encrypted names that give me no clue re: what is in any specific file.

I've been using the web clients of Proton Mail and Drive for a long time in Librewolf. Today it suddenly is stuck on the "Loading Proton Mail..." screen, getting no where. Still works in regular Firefox. Tried disabling both uBlock Origin and NoScript for the tab in case some settings there suddenly were changed, but did not help. This is very frustrating. EDIT: After a second reboot it now works again. Unsure why it took two reboots, I'm glad it works.

One redditor asked about it on the most recent AMA: **Hi, is there a plan to release protondrive for linux?** Proton CEO's answer: *We're currently looking at options for how to fund this. It's an expensive development because Linux has so many different flavors and we need deep integration with the filesystem, and it is not yet clear if there are enough Linux users that would allow us to offset the cost of this development. Like many things Linux, it may eventually just have to subsidized from Proton's reserve budget. That doesn't mean it won't get done, it will just take longer since we are also subsidizing several other efforts at this time, such as the Proton VPN free servers for elections campaign: https://protonvpn.com/blog/free-servers-before-elections* *-Andy* Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1ff211y/comment/lmrdepr

>Proton, the Swiss creators of privacy-focused products like Proton Mail and ProtonVPN, recently released the latest product in their ever-growing lineup: Proton Wallet. Announced at the end of July 2024, it promotes itself as "an easy-to-use, self-custodial" Bitcoin wallet that will ostensibly make financial freedom more attainable for everyone. >It may well be that Proton Wallet is the easiest way to start using Bitcoin, but is a Bitcoin wallet the solution people need to improve their financial privacy? >Contrary to popular belief, cryptocurrency is not an inherently private transactional system. >Had Proton Wallet added support for Monero or a similarly private cryptocurrency, they could have single-handedly boosted a financial system that is actually private by default by a significant degree. In my eyes, failing to do so in favor of the market leader is an unfortunate step back from their "privacy by default" mantra. >Proton Wallet seems like a product that doesn't know its own place in the world. >Is it meant to save us from the tyranny of payment processors like PayPal who can freeze your funds at a whim? >Or, was Bitcoin chosen to give us independence from fiat currency, including stablecoins, entirely? >However, if Proton Wallet wasn't meant for all that, if it was simply meant to bring privacy to Bitcoin, then it's certainly a failure. >Proton hasn't taken any risks with this product, meaning it's really only good for satisfying a singular belief: That Bitcoin is just inherently good, and anything to promote Bitcoin is inherently good as well. I don't share these fanatical beliefs of Bitcoin maximalists, however, when Bitcoin is demonstrably lacking in a wide variety of ways. >Personally, I'm a bit of a cryptocurrency pessimist in general, but I can see some appeal for the technology in very specific areas. Unfortunately, Proton Wallet doesn't seem to fit in to a useful niche in any meaningful way. The functionality it does support is extremely basic, even by Bitcoin standards, and it simply doesn't provide enough value over the existing marketplace. >If you're an existing Proton user simply looking for a place to store some Bitcoin you already have sitting around, Proton Wallet might be perfectly adequate. For everyone else, I don't see this product being too useful. Bitcoin is still far too volatile to be a solid investment or used as a safe store of value if you crave financial independence and sovereignty, and Proton Wallet simply isn't adequate for paying for things privately online.

Proton recently released WireGuard support on Linux. While I really like it there's a small UI issue with the wifi icon. When connected to VPN it looks like unknown network(?). I have confirmed the issue on two laptops. Both running Fedora 40, KDE spin.

A bit of context: I am a long time user of Proton (5+ years, Unlimited user) services. I am also a long time user of 1Password (since 2016). Understandably I have hundreds of items currently in my 1Password account, and a safe work flow on my devices with that. Would it make sense to start moving those entries to Proton Pass (as it is included) and be off a bit cheaper, or keep them separated as to not throw all the eggs in the Proton basket? Ideas, thoughts, tips or experiences?

Proton’s switch to ownership via a non-profit leaves me with deep concerns. I’m a resident/citizen of the US, and in the US it is possible for a determined outside hostile party to takeover a non-profit organization. Hostile takeover of non-profits has occurred many times in the US. Left-leaning activist organizations with government/NGO backing are many times the parties initiating the takeovers. Proton’s core mission definitely puts it in the crosshairs of these kinds of takeover attempts. I don’t know anything about Swiss legal structures for non-profits. How safe is the Proton Foundation for a takeover attempt? Can a determined activist organization get voted onto the board and engineer a takeover?

I tried rclone and it freaked out at regular ping intervals and instead deleted everything on the drive. GG. I want to like you Proton but your decisions of late are ASTHENATE. I wouldn't have minded the crypto wallet release if basic features on the core apps were remotely coherently finished. The AI writer add on for a local model doesn't even work on Firefox. For people supposedly embracing the FOSStyle, this isn't the way. /rant

Every Monday morning I get a spreadsheet from one of my distributors that lists all items I have on pre and back order. I download that file, and then do my spreadsheet sorting. However, since I started to use the ProtonMail app on MacOS (vs in Safari) when I download the file, it gives an error that there is already a file by that name. When I save with Safari it adds a number to make it unique. I am unsure if this is a MacOS issue, or a ProtonMail app issue.

I am trying to send an email from an alias with simplelogin. I went to their website and clicked the contact link, but after sending the email, I looked in the headers and saw my real email with my real name. Is this on my side or can the recipient also see my real name? If so, how to turn this off?

A few months ago I installed Proton Drive on my new PC. It started having issues so I sent it back in for repair. I uninstalled Proton Drive then deleted my files for privacy. Last week I installed Proton Drive again. To my surprise, it scrambled all of my files locally and remote. All my root folders were deleted and my root is now filled with "Delete conflict" files and folders. I reported this to Proton immediately. After giving them my logs and details support told me... - This is expected: "Proton Drive is designed to synchronize ALL changes, even after long periods of not syncing" - No rollback is possible: "Please note that we are unable to revert this behavior. You will have to restore the files manually" - They plan to address this: "Regardless, we will absolutely be making improvements to avoid such problems in the future." For me I have about 100 files to address, which is manageable, but for others I'm sure this would be a showstopper. The delete conflicts don't have version history either, so I have to figure out how to weave everything back together.

from the team: --------------------- Hi everyone, To better streamline communication for organizations relying on Proton Mail, we’re adding a new feature: **Groups.** Create a group for a department or team in your organization, and assign its own dedicated email address. It then works as a distribution list, allowing everyone to reach all group members, all protected by end-to-end encryption. For example, a group address for your customer care or HR team allows all inquiries directed to them to be seen by the entire team, eliminating the need for a shared email account. Groups can also include addresses outside of your organization, such as customers, contractors, and agencies. However, in order to retain end-to-end encryption, external collaborators would need to use Proton Mail, too. Unlike contact groups, already available in Proton Mail, Group addresses are better suited for organizations: ⭕ they are centrally managed and automatically available across the entire organization 🗓️ they remain valid even as team members change The feature is rolling out progressively to users on Proton Mail Professional, Proton Business, and Visionary plans. Once available, you can get started by going to Settings > Organization > Groups on the web. Learn more at this link https://proton.me/support/groups and let us know what you think in the comments.

I’ve been using Proton VPN for 1-2 years and in the past few months I’ve had some serious issues with youtube flat out refusing to work properly. Sometimes I try piped which is really hit and miss. Anyone else experiencing something similar? Any solutions? Seems like most servers are rejected by google.

I think this is the major feature that proton is missing that Google has. Given how big proton has become, I'd like to suggest proton to implement something like this for the ultimate Google like experience but with a trusted company.
