Looking for a microphone boom arm, but how do they work?

I've got an AT2020, so far I've been using it fine on its tripod but I want an arm. Those basketball-hoop-looking things that the microphone goes in though, are they a one-size-fits-all? I'd hate to get the wrong thing..
