I'm lucky enough to be middle class, ever since landing a somewhat boring job that pays, like, 75% more than my old one, all in web development. I still can't afford luxuries like a car or a house, but hey, I have a nice electric bike! And I can pay someone to clean my apartment every two weeks. It costs, like, 7% of my income, but I know I wouldn't be able to keep it clean otherwise. Health issues suck.

I have poor friends who don't earn much more than the minimum wage. They often complain about the price of groceries, and say things like "I've wanted this game so bad for so long but I don't have any money left this month". Each time I'm reminded of how thankful I am that I don't really worry about prices anymore at the grocery store. And it makes me sad that we hadn't such bad financial priorities that we have people WITH jobs who have trouble paying for food. Imagine those who can't find a job!

There's also my dad, as well as a friend couple of mine, who are rich. The friends, it's crazy. They each have a car, PLUS a special summer car, they buy Dungeons and Dragons books on a monthly basis, they go on international trips yearly, they go camping in an RV, they're always doing activities that cost a lot of money, they go to the restaurant a lot, etc. My dad is also on an airplane on a yearly basis.

It makes my head spin to just think about the sheer money. But none of these people are evil my rich friend is definitely more left-wing than anything else, and he's a very smart person. They were just both blessed with luck, energy and talent, I guess. My dad is just a normal near-boomer. Neither better nor worse than the rest of them. He just got a high-paying factory job and had the energy to keep going.

I'm reminded of those people whenever I'm tempted to put all rich people in the same basket.

Probably doable, but I'm told it would be illegal because of the proximity of water. Also quite a bit of work to arrange in an aesthetically acceptable manner.

    Thanks for the details!

If I owned this apartment, I'd get the outlet added in a heartbeat. But since I'm a renter, I'm really hesitant.

As for the outlet... It WOULD be possible to run one along the ceiling or something like that, but it would be so much work to do in an aesthetically acceptable manner (and also I'm not too sure how the building code would like that) that at that point I'd almost rather pay an electrician. Which brings me back to: do I really want to pay to improve this place when I don't know how long I'll live here?

    Decisions, decisions...

Sorry, I'm not angry at you. I just got a pre-emptively emotional reaction to the prospect of being cold.

Dude I don't even drink cold water unless it's a very hot day because I have precious little body heat and it takes a long time to get it back.

The idea of getting frozen by the crotch/butt does not amuse me.

Sadly, that would be even more difficult. My toilet is across from my sink, so there would really be no safe way to hook it up that wouldn't imply someone who really knows what they're doing. At that point it'd probably be easier to hire an electrician to add a power plug.

But that sounds expensive, and I'm a renter...

Vue and React are popular alternatives.

Lit is a less popular alternative that's 100% compatible with native WebComponents, and I've been interested in it ever since I first heard of it.

According to the dictionary, 抜き打ちnukiuchi and 抜き付けnukitsuke sound like synonyms. I'm a little confused.

I guess with uchi (to strike down) vs tsuke (to put, attach, etc) one sounds more like the result and the action but it's weird that the definitions from Jisho.org aren't too explicit.

There's also smelting. Japan didn't have the technology to completely melt iron, which complicates things.

Rapiers are a tad more modern, but there is a parallel in how they were a bit of a status symbol and often used for less "normal warfare" scenarios.

Try thinking of a clock. Most screws get tighter when turned clockwise. When time moves forward, your schedule gets tighter. Like the screw.

I'm not sure it'll help, but since it's a rotational reference for a rotational target, maybe it'll help.

Personally I'm constantly drawing circles with my finger like a clock hand and then positioning my hand to face the screw while still drawing circles. It helps a lot.

    Discovering new communities

One thing I liked (and sometimes disliked) about Reddit was that my feed was a mix of posts in communities I'd joined and a few suggestions of posts from subs The Algorithm™ thought I might like. On Lemmy I'm realizing I'm starting to fall into a bit of an echo chamber situation because I basically only see stuff I'm already a member of, unless I explicitly go to All or scroll the list of communities. Are there less involved (lazy) ways of discovering new stuff and broadening my horizons a bit?

Sometimes, when I'm really cold, it can take over an hour to warm me up, even with a heating blanket. The quickest solution, a hot shower, feels really inefficient with all the heat going down the drain. That got me thinking about microwaves. They heat food (partly) from the inside, contrary to simple infrared radiation. Could we safely do that with people? I found a [Reddit thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/ggbep/askscience_could_we_use_controlled_microwaves_to/) where a non-lethal weapon and people getting eye damage because they stayed too long in front of a radar dish. Could some sort of device be made that would warm specific areas (say, a hand or a leg) without endangering sensitive areas like the eyes? Would it actually warm someone up from the inside? Would it be possible to make it safe? Would it present advantages in cases of hypothermia, compared to heated IV fluids?

I don't see how it's a benefit to capitalism or companies or, well, anyone, really, to allow people to make thousands of trades a day for minute profits on each. My gut feeling is that the stock market would not suffer, and less resources would be wasted, if trades and updates to stock prices were limited to, say, one batch per hour. There are probably reasons the system is the way it is though.
