Linux laptop recommendations?
  • SirLotsaLocks SirLotsaLocks Now 100%

A lot of people here are recommending linux first laptops like tuxedo and system76 but if they are too expensive there's also dell and lenovo which are linux-second vendors. Every dell laptop I've used has worked great with linux and are reasonably repairable. The only things to watch out for are gimicky features like fingerprint readers or anything that would need custom firmware, and super slim laptops (for repairability and the potential for weirder parts on the inside) but even for weird hardware like fingerprint sensors, both dell and lenovo have been working towards supporting them on linux as well.

Yeah I think a major release is coming. I think they're working on making the browser more unique and polished before having an official release.

I think that's a good thing because it means it's probably targeting normal people since the country is moving towards less reliance on things like windows.

  • Flag of the American Party of Labor. I'm definitely a fan of communist flags that use the gear motif.

Yeah gears look badass on flags and insignias and whatever they can be put on

  • Did you know that Fred Hampton was a communist, and that the Black Panther party called for the overthrow of Capitalism and to bring socialism?
  • SirLotsaLocks SirLotsaLocks Now 100%

not until years after I got out of school. I remember them skimming over the whole black panthers movement in general with a TL:DR Black panthers bad and violent, MLK good and peaceful.

yeah imo matrix is better in most ways except for being lightweight, though that is also being worked on. irc has a place but for normal use I think matrix is better than irc.

heads up the windows releases work but they can be messy because most of the devs are on linux/mac and testing windows is more difficult.

though they should remove those ugly sponsored top sites by default imho.

They're working on a whole new start/new-tab page that will fix that

also at the moment there's quite a few smaller updates between when the AUR version was released and now, it will probably be updated for the dot 88/89 release (probably 89 now since firefox 88 is about to be out of date)

I asked the devs and they said it might have something to do with them compiling on the latest ubuntu because then it can break on older ubuntu versions as well as some older distros in general. That's good to know.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/67935 > New gecko based browsers are rare nowadays but this one is especially unique to me because it is more than just "firefox with tweaks" like a lot of the ones I've come across. The UI is different, it's working on custom settings, a new more powerful sidebar, a new theming system, and potentially IPFS/Dat support further down the line. It's very early in development but it's still impressive as it is.

It looks like it only officially supports linux and MacOS and BSD support is unofficial while active. I'd imagine if someone wants to put in the effort to support windows they could do it but at the moment I wouldn't expect it. You could try running it in WSL though.

yeah I agree, foss games are cool but most of them don't even get close to what most proprietary games have been able to do unfortunately.

I'm sad to see this, it's a really cool project. Still I respect their decision and it's not entirely dead but instead going into "hobby mode" where it's just maintained as the author needs, no more release dates for updates or planned features.
