It seems solar and batteries are much better ideas at grid level.

Seems like the government has 0 interest in building out the grid to accommodate it.

You can be tolerant of intolerance. But its got to be about homophobia, sexism, threats of violence, and hatred of the status quo. But it only works if a minority is doing it.

The problem is the same all over Europe people are unhappy with immigration from MENA.

None of the centre or left parties will deal with it, except in Denmark and Poland which coincidentally have seen lower votes for far right parties. But that's probably unrelated right.

So yea. Let's decide who should be in power and what they think of is right goes and ban anyone that thinks differently.

    I think I actually did.

I always got told I could do whatever I wanted and didn't know what I wanted to do. But I figured I didn't want to do anything manual into old age so ruled that out. I knew I wanted to do a lot of different things and work with different people. But talking can be difficult.

Emails and working together with lots of other people and working on problem is great. Wearing a suit and making big decision seemed really interesting.

Work in general sucks but it beats the alternatives. Everyone on this website comes across as somewhat autistic. Dealing with people isn't the end of the world.

And no, the hypothetical of the robot skyscrapers is not "meaningless."

It's not meaningless in itself. Its meaningless to the conversation. It's literally a hypothetical you invented for no reason. You're just rambling.

Are you actually trying to claim that if the population was much smaller than it is today total resource use across the globe would be the same?

Because if not my point stands.

A lot of people think rockets can be very profitable. Its just a long term bet and you lack imagination. I would need to check but I'm pretty certain spacex is profitable.

Those other companies are still in R and D.

The only billionaire I know of that is launching rockets is Elon Musk.

That's just evidence that capitalism is efficient. Because SpaceX has revolutionised space travel making the only reusable rocket doing something all the government agencies said was impossible. NASAs new unbuilt rocket is using tech from the 1970 that they are going to throe away into the ocean on every launch.

The rest you say is meaningless. How you expect this robotic skyscrapers to be built? Some MIT masters project or some capitalist experiment?

There has been efficiency gains throughout. Capitalism is amazing for that, far better than other systems.

The problem is too many people. If standard of living is to increase then the resource requirement is due to massive unsustainable population growth.

That and the fact the public hate externalities and don't want them used at all never mind aggressively.

It's so bad. You can be bang on mid BMI and people will tell you you need to eat more because you are too skinny.

People have no idea what is underweight, skinny, overweight. I would go as far as most people will think low end obese is healthy.

    Not the case.

Use to do a lot of sport had knee surgery at 21. As mentioned probably didn't eat enough, done a lot of on, off stop start stuff. Travelled the world. Switched activities. Was never overweight.

While I could have done more to improve my knees some people are just born with better knees than others and I've come to accept that. I don't have issues with my back or shoulders or neck or hands. I know people my age that do. It's just how it goes.

    Fucking hell this is true.

So is the two day hangovers, you just don't get better. You wake up with a hangover where you think if I eat and nap it will be gone. 10pm rolls around and you feel exactly the same as you did at 10am. Then you feel tired and run down on the second day. People tell me it gets even worse and I believe them now. Can't drink hazy IPA without living to regret it, but I do that all the time.

I have never been overweight and largely been in shape but on and off. Now I feel it so bad getting back into it. It isn't about pushing yourself as hard as you can without pulling a muscle. It is about carefully listening to your body and when your joints start feeling weird it's time to stop.

Don't fuck about with your knees people. Wish I didn't jump off shit as a kid, also wish I ate more for recovery.

Where the fuck is my stem cell injections we were promised 10 years ago!

    https://ember-climate.org/insights/research/the-uks-journey-to-a-coal-power-phase-out/

"The UK’s era of coal-free power begins on the 1st October 2024, following a rapid decline over the last 12 years which has seen power sector emissions plummet by three quarters." "This report provides an overview of the UK coal power phase-out, looking at changes in electricity generation since 2012 when coal began to rapidly decline. It provides context on how phase-out was achieved through a mix of initiatives and policy frameworks, and considers how this can inform the next chapter of UK power sector decarbonisation." "Coal power provided almost 40% of UK generation in 2012, shrinking to 2% by 2019, and finally falling to zero by October 2024. In 2012, coal generated 143 TWh of electricity, equivalent to Sweden’s total power demand in 2023."

    https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/waymo-driverless-robotaxi-expansion-19657064.php

"the Alphabet-owned company has been allowed to deploy an unlimited number of robotaxis for paid driverless rides in the city [San Francisco] at all hours. In March, state regulators allowed the company to expand its commercial ride-hailing to 22 Peninsula cities. Now, Waymo officials are declaring victory after a year of commercial driverless service without any serious incidents and say it gives them confidence to speed up their robotaxi expansion. David Margines, Waymo’s director of product management, said in an interview that the company’s one-year track record in San Francisco “is a validation” that its robotaxis can “drive safely” and “coexist in the communities that we want to operate in.” “Looking back over the year, I’m thrilled to say that it’s been a big success,” he said."

Seen this on reddit and thought it was an interesting question that largely is not talked about. It is largely an issue that gets sidelined and hidden because people don't want to talk about it or accept that it exists. Hopefully this gets some traction to break that marginalisation.

The government has announced the immediate lifting of the de facto ban on onshore wind development in England, among other actions to speed up planning decisions. The move, announced by chancellor Rachel Reeves in her first major speech since taking office, has been made as it sets a commitment to double the capacity of onshore wind in Britain by 2030 and boost energy independence.
