on the surface they do a lot right. warrant canary, no logs, solid infrastructure, profitable.
for me, i really don't like the weird ways that they market. super misleading to imply that they make a person "anonymous" and/or greatly improve your privacy beyond you sending them your information instead of your isp. i also really dont like the lack of transparency, particularly with closed-source clients. i also really don't like the number of controversies that nord has been in, even insofar as getting hacked. i don't want my vpn provider to have any, let alone quite a few, of these controversies.
in terms of the model, proton is transitioning to a non-profit which reinforces why they are so well-regarded by the community. long history of doing right by consumers, where it matters most.

not to cast doubt on anything he says here, but steve has increasingly been making 'dunk' videos for the past year or two. i feel like his channel has been trying to find (or create) exposés, because those are the videos that pop off. starting from the video of that NZXT case that caused fires.

What do you guys think of the idea of smart homes? I could make a basic setup using https://home-assistant.io to control my home temperature and lighting; the tools for doing this are everywhere nowadays and implementation doesn't seem too horrific anymore. I refreshed my page a while ago and saw that my username in the top right was belonged to someone else, and the profile picture was wrong. I checked my profile and everything seemed fine but the drop-down in the top right still had the other user and pfp. When I appended their user ID to the URL bar, I found their profile and it had the pfp that was showing on my end. I posted and it worked fine, my user was attached. Just a weird visual glitch? Saying it for the sake of saying it :p
The European Citizens Initiative is a place where EU citizens can start and sign petitions. It guarantees that one million signatories will bring a petition to the Commission. This is a reminder to take a look at the petitions on there and sign any that seem interesting to you. There are generally only a handful, and they're almost always valuable. They take about 20 seconds to sign. This is a dead-simple way to be an active citizen, maybe we could treat this as something like a chain message where we remind one person in our lives to check these out. Many small voices are more powerful than the loudest megaphone, use your voice.
