For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Great Beauty (2013), a drama-comedy about a snobbish, pretentious Italian author’s trip through Rome following his 65th birthday, and his realization that life may contain more worth than drinking, drugs, parties, and philandering. What has he done with this life? Existential crises follow, along with some absurdism as he encounters various strange characters. This won a bunch of awards at the time, including the Academy Award for Best Picture, and it is considered one of the best Italian films of the 2010s. Looks neat; let’s watch. This is generally considered to be the best work to date of Italian auteur director Paolo Sorrentino, who is otherwise best-known for Hand of God (2021), which we have not watched. After that is The Wild Robot (2024), the latest animated feature from Dreamworks. It centers on a robot who becomes stranded on a desert island; it find purpose by caring for a baby goose, and the two bond while the goose attempts to reunite with its flock. Director is Chris Sanders, the guy who helmed Lilo & Stitch (2010) and How to Train Your Dragon (2010). Critics are calling this one of Dreamworks’ best films ever, and it is already garnering award buzz. A good-quality camrip is already available, so we will watch it. I'm writing this post because it's getting very low ratings. From the reviews that I read, many people say it doesn't meet their expectations of what a superhero movie should be. I'm not a capeshit enjoyer. I chose to see Joker 2 because Joker 1 had vague themes of "defunding welfare programs is bad". In the first movie, Joker loses access to his mental illness medication because the politicians defund the welfare programs and that leads Joker to start doing crimes. What I liked about Joker 2 is that everyone around him wants to make him miserable, but instead he chooses to be happy. In my opinion, it is the most pure example of absurdity. The whole world wants to make Joker miserable and he is powerless to change other people, but he can deny giving the world what they want so he chooses to laugh. I find that to be entertaining. The movie was about 60% musical. Whenever Joker starts to hallucinate, everyone starts singing. I think it was okay, but other people did not like that. You probably won't like the movie if you are expecting it to follow the superhero movie formula.

A whole lot of cartoonish antics follow, along with sword fights, musical numbers, and animated sequences. This is the sort of movie that seems to have been written by a ten-year-old. Looks fun; let’s check it out. After that is Death Becomes Her, a fantasy-comedy about an aging actress (Goldie Hawn) who decides to take an immortality potion as part of a plan to murder her rival (Meryl Streep) and take back her ex-fiance (Bruce Willis). Unfortunately, the potion doesn’t quite work as planned, and things spiral out of control from there. Hilarity ensues. Director is Robert Zemeckis, the guy behind Back to the Future (1985), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and Forrest Gump (1994). As with those, this film was lauded for its groundbreaking special effects, which often cross into a comedic version of body horror. Spoilers? Can you have spoilers about Things That Happened? About the Brabant killers in Belgium. Considering the opening part of the first episode being "left or right, both sides should come together" the director seemed pretty set on making the Neo-nazi militias the bad guys, and their intelligence agency handlers/government leashholders even worse. Outright there is near no negative socialist imagery they (nazis) call the people they murder communists a few times but considering they're the only ones, you know, doing the murders it's pretty funny. it's not outright positive to the left, but they legitimately bring up the strategy of tension and how this could've (read: this is what the director believes) been a motive for it. In addition to this, their depiction of "cop solidarity" being shown seems to be extremely relevant. Those who have nepo connections rise, those who don't, get in line or get your teeth knocked out. Do not rat on your colleagues or you'll end up beaten or worse. Got a few episodes left, but I'd reccomend it as a watch. Fascinating look at the Gladio-aligned crimes from a relative normie POV.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Bound for the Fields, the Mountains, and the Seacoast (1986), a WW2 melodrama-comedy-coming-of-age story from renowned Japanese auteur Nobuhiko Obayashi, the guy best-known for House (1977); we have also previously watched Miss Lonely (1985), His Motorbike Her Island (1986), and The Rocking Horsemen (1992). All were good, so we’re returning to the well once again. This one is about a schoolboy growing up in Japan in the late 1930s as the country falls further and further into a nationalistic frenzy. He learns that a girl he knows is abot to be sold into sex work to pay heer dad’s debts, and so, he teams up with some other kids to help her out. A whole lot of over-the-top antics follow, with Obayashi’s usual comic-bookish aesthetic. “Live-action anime” is a common refrain in reviews which are excellent across the board. Next is Night and the City (1950), a British film-noir about a destitute petty thief who can’t do anything right, and has been reduced to mooching off his girlfriend. Suddenly, he discovers an opportunity to hit the big money as a wrestling promoter, and goes all-in attempting to restore his dignity. I’m sure this will end happily. Director is Jules Dassin, who is otherwise best-known for the French heist thriller Rififi (1955), which we previously watched. This is considered one of the best noirs of the 1950s, so let’s give it a whirl. Most of these movies are called psychological movies, but searching under this category I have not found anything that comes close to what I am looking for, movies like memento, 12 monkeys and primer are characterized by something, a person who knows information (Be good or bad), and is in a situation isolated from the rest of the population, no one other than the protagonist or a very small group of people knows what is happening and what it implies, that is the type of movies I am looking for, movies with isolated stories, if you know of any movie that makes you feel that I don't know what it is with the 3 movies I mentioned, please leave me the name and synopsis. I'll start with "PCU." The one upside is that the main villain is played by the lady who also played  and she's amazing as she always was even while playing a terrible role in an enlightened centrist pop-nihilist propaganda film. The rest of it is steaming smug-seasoned "caring about things makes you stupid" ideology. And I mean pretty much *anything* that might matter to disadvantaged people or the planet they live on. Wildlife conservation? Stupid. (tear down those flyers, yeah *fuck* non-human life forms!) Veganism? Stupid. (better bully them until they cry!) Black activism? Stupid. (lol look they're chasing the clueless white boy with vaguely lynch-themed cinematics WHAT IF WE REVERSED THE VICTIM AND PERPETRATOR?!) Feminism? Stupid. (they just need to get laid lololololololol)  is *politically correct* and has two hyphenated last names? Some rich white assholes firing her is seen as the *happy ending!* All of those silly people that care too much about things just have a le epic drunk party at the end and that washes away all their concerns about the world like so many lotuses eaten by so many lotus eaters. *They touched grass!*  Fuck that movie so much. All the chuds in my immediate biological family *loved it,* of course.

First up is The Look of Silence (2015), the sequel to the highly-acclaimed Indonesian death-squad documentary The Act of Killing (2012), and directed again by Joshua Oppenheimer. Unlike its predecessor, which follows the death-squad members, this one focuses on their victims, bringing their family members into contact with the people who killed their friends, children, and relatives. Drama ensues. Highly-acclaimed, just like the previous film, so let’s give it a whirl. After that is Coffee & Cigarettes (2003), an eleven-part anthology from Jim Jarmusch featuring various humorous vignettes involving people talking while smoking and drinking coffee. Among the featured actors are Bill Murray, Steve Buscemi, Cate Blanchett, Roberto Benigni, the White Stripes, the Wu-Tang Clan, Tom Waits, and Iggy Pop. Yep, it’s a Jarmusch movie.
