Friday Movie Night, 8PM EST: Italian snob city-tour dramedy The Great Beauty (2013) and Dreamworks’ animated goose-robot buddy tale The Wild Robot (2024)! (CWs inside)

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Great Beauty (2013), a drama-comedy about a snobbish, pretentious Italian author’s trip through Rome following his 65th birthday, and his realization that life may contain more worth than drinking, drugs, parties, and philandering. What has he done with this life? Existential crises follow, along with some absurdism as he encounters various strange characters. This won a bunch of awards at the time, including the Academy Award for Best Picture, and it is considered one of the best Italian films of the 2010s. Looks neat; let’s watch. This is generally considered to be the best work to date of Italian auteur director Paolo Sorrentino, who is otherwise best-known for Hand of God (2021), which we have not watched. After that is The Wild Robot (2024), the latest animated feature from Dreamworks. It centers on a robot who becomes stranded on a desert island; it find purpose by caring for a baby goose, and the two bond while the goose attempts to reunite with its flock. Director is Chris Sanders, the guy who helmed Lilo & Stitch (2010) and How to Train Your Dragon (2010). Critics are calling this one of Dreamworks’ best films ever, and it is already garnering award buzz. A good-quality camrip is already available, so we will watch it. First up is Inherent Vice (2014), from renowned auteur Paul Thomas Anderson, the guy behind Boogie Nights (1997), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), There Will Be Blood (2007), and The Master (2012), among others. Joaquin Phoenix stars a detective in the 1970s investigating the disappearance of his ex; things get weird from there as the plot takes a backseat to his various encounters with the strange inhabitants of southern California. Apparently it is also something of a comedy. I guess we’ll find out. After that is Welcome or No Trespassing (1964), a farce from Come and See (1985) director Elem Klimov about a group of Soviet children at a youth summer camp who decide to raise some mischief against the camp authorities, a dynamic that increasingly resembles an insurgency against an occupying force. For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Watari the Ninja Boy (1966), an adaptation of a manga about a kid ninja who infiltrates an evil clan to take out some bad guys. A whole lot of cartoonish antics follow, along with sword fights, musical numbers, and animated sequences. This is the sort of movie that seems to have been written by a ten-year-old. Looks fun; let’s check it out. After that is Death Becomes Her, a fantasy-comedy about an aging actress (Goldie Hawn) who decides to take an immortality potion as part of a plan to murder her rival (Meryl Streep) and take back her ex-fiance (Bruce Willis). Unfortunately, the potion doesn’t quite work as planned, and things spiral out of control from there. Hilarity ensues. Director is Robert Zemeckis, the guy behind Back to the Future (1985), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and Forrest Gump (1994). As with those, this film was lauded for its groundbreaking special effects, which often cross into a comedic version of body horror. Sunday Kino Night, 8PM EST: Nobuhiko Obayashi’s WW2 cartoonish dramedy Bound for the Fields, the Mountains, and the Seacoast (1986) and British loser-thief noir Night and the City (1950)! (CWs inside)

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Bound for the Fields, the Mountains, and the Seacoast (1986), a WW2 melodrama-comedy-coming-of-age story from renowned Japanese auteur Nobuhiko Obayashi, the guy best-known for House (1977); we have also previously watched Miss Lonely (1985), His Motorbike Her Island (1986), and The Rocking Horsemen (1992). All were good, so we’re returning to the well once again. This one is about a schoolboy growing up in Japan in the late 1930s as the country falls further and further into a nationalistic frenzy. He learns that a girl he knows is abot to be sold into sex work to pay heer dad’s debts, and so, he teams up with some other kids to help her out. A whole lot of over-the-top antics follow, with Obayashi’s usual comic-bookish aesthetic. “Live-action anime” is a common refrain in reviews which are excellent across the board. Next is Night and the City (1950), a British film-noir about a destitute petty thief who can’t do anything right, and has been reduced to mooching off his girlfriend. Suddenly, he discovers an opportunity to hit the big money as a wrestling promoter, and goes all-in attempting to restore his dignity. I’m sure this will end happily. Director is Jules Dassin, who is otherwise best-known for the French heist thriller Rififi (1955), which we previously watched. This is considered one of the best noirs of the 1950s, so let’s give it a whirl. Director is Coralie Fargeat, who is otherwise best-known for the similarly-themed Revenge (2017), which we have not watched; this is her best-regarded film to date, and has already been receiving some awards buzz. After that is Drifting Clouds (1996), a romantic dramedy from Aki Kourismaki, the most renowned filmmaker from the bleak, icy wasteland known as Finland. For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The Man Who Saved the World (1982), AKA Turkish Star Wars, a particularly infamous piece of Z-budgeted schlock. A pair of Turkish space adventurers duel an evil space wizard and his minions on an alien planet; a whole lot of fighting follows, along with footage blatantly lifted from Star Wars and other Hollywood flicks and inserted into new contexts. Apparently the film also contains some lectures on Islam. We will a view a rip cobbled together from degraded old film reels and an ancient VHS release. This will be the first Turkish movie we have ever watched on Hextube; another country crossed off the list. After that is Asteroid City (2023), another comedy from Wes Anderson, since our recent showings from hs filmography have all been hits. It concerns a play based on a fictional writer’s experience in a stargazing event in a remote town in the 1950s, which becomes complicated when an alien shows up and steals the asteroid after which the town was named. Hilarity ensues as the film switches back nnd forth between the play and the “real” events on which it is based. Looks good; let’s check it out. For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Kagemusha (1980), one of the most critically-acclaimed films of one of the most renowned filmmakers of all time, Akira Kurosawa. It is a war epic set in feudal Japan, concerning a petty thief who finds himself enlisted to impersonate a deceased warlord. As he cements his place in his new role, he is torn between his inability to fit in with the social mores of the military-nobility class, and his drive to inhabit the warlord’s life seamlessly, so that he may exert his power to its fullest extent. Universal praise for this one, so let’s check it out. After that is Lovers Rock (2020), a romance from Steve McQueen, whose films Hunger (2008) and Mangrove (2020) we previously watched. It is part of the “Small Axe” collection of five films (all centering on Black British life, though otherwise unrelated) that he released simultaneously in 2020. The film is set during a wild house party in 1980s London, and sees a dude and a lady meeting and beginning their romance while racial, class, and political tensions threaten to explode around them. First up is Climax (2018), which centers on the worst party ever, a French dance-rave that turns into a nightmare after everyone’s drinks are spiked with LSD. A whole lot of drug-addled revelry and excess follows while some of the partiers try to find the culprit. Oh, and did I mention there’s dancing? Director is French auteur Gaspar Noe, whose films we have not watched yet, but he is a good buddy of Harmony Korine, whose Gummo (1997) was a hit on Hextube. After that is Fury (1936), a crime drama from renowned director Fritz Lang, the guy behind Metropolis (1927) and M (1931). In this, the most-acclaimed film of his Hollywood phase, a man (Spencr Tracy) goes to visit his girlfriend in a small town, at which point he is arrested and accused of being a fugitive kidnapper. Drama ensues as he tries to secure justice and avoid being lynched by the irate townspeople. BONUS: We will also watch the 22-minute short The Private Life of a Cat (1947), an up-close-and-personal look at a cat’s birth and upbringing from avant-garde duo Alexander Hammid and Maya Deren. It looks adorable. For this special 9/11 Super Slop Night, 8PM EST, it’s Project A-ko 5 & 6 (1990) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)! Bonus short film: The Red Balloon (1956)! (CWs inside)

For this 9/11 edition of Super Slop Night, by popular demand, it’s the long-awaited screening of the fifth and six Project A-ko movies, the final entries in the series, which transplant the characters into a completely new setting and otherwise have nothing to do with the previous installments. They’re still fun. After that is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023), the latest version of the neverending franchise. It follows a quartet of four anthropomorphic turtle brothers who emerge from the sewers of New York City at 15 years old and interact with humans for the first time. Also, they fight stuff. This is animated in a style similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (2018) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022). Many are calling it the best version of TMNT ever. I guess we’ll find out. It is the debut feature of director Jeff Rowe, who was previously a writer for The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021). BONUS: we will also watch The Red Balloon (1956), a short film about a French boy searching for his beloved balloon on the streets of Paris. It is widely considered one of the best short films of all time, even winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. It is the only film of note by director Albert Lamorisse, who is better-known as the creator of the board game Risk. Small world. Sunday Kino Night, 8PM EST: Korean serial-killer thriller The Chaser (2008) and Australian Boer War court-martial drama Breaker Morant (1980)! (CWs inside)

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Chaser (2008), a Korean crime thriller about a corrupt cop who has become a pimp and finds his prositutes sddenly disappearing without a trace, only to realize tht they had all seen the same client beforehand. Cue a cat-and-mouse game between the two shitty guys as each attempts to take down the other. Director is Na Hong-jin, whose horror film The Wailing (2016) we previously watched; this is debut, and one of the highest-rated Korean films on Letterboxd. Let’s check it out. Next is Breaker Morant (1980), an Australian drama set during the Boer War (1899-1902) and concerning a cout-martial of three Australian soldiers for executing prisoners. The trouble is that their British commanding officers ordered them to do so, and are now pinning the blame on their underlings to save the reputation of the general staff. God Damn the UKKK:The Movie. Director is Bruce Beresford, who is better known for, uhh, Driving Miss Daisy (1989); this is by a pretty wide margin his most critically-acclaimed film.
