I sure hope we are. I've had this deep feeling of loss for the internet that started about a decade or so ago, and has only gotten worse. Seeing giants like reddit and Twitter topple has filled me with hope again. Maybe this really can be the people's medium again!

I think it's just that I found the UI unintuitive when I first opened it up. It is nice to have all the different formats right there for you to select, but I found it difficult to find where to challenge a specific friend to a match, which is why I downloaded the app. Chess.com just felt more streamlined in that respect. That said, I've had a newfound appreciation for the app since starting this thread

I didn't realize lichess was open source until this thread, definitely changed my opinion on it a bit, but is there more to it's story than just that?

Yeah that's true, but if feel like most of those people have at least some marketable quality, I really struggle to think of any for DJ Khalid. Except for the potential to make fun of him like you mentioned I suppose
Feel free to take this down if this isn't what this community is for, but I was just thinking about that guy and wondering how on earth he ever became popular. Like people talk about industry plants, but he surely must be one no?

I've only used lichess to play with friends who don't have chess.com accounts, and didn't realize they had free puzzles. That's definitely a big plus!
I just found it a little unintuitive to add my friend and start a match with him compared to chess.com, but ultimately I agree that there is room for both to exist

Yup, I totally agree. I was really disappointed to see spiderverse follow suit with it
Which one do people prefer? I've personally found the chess.com UI to be a lot warmer and more inviting than lichess, but I'm interested to hear people's opinions

I have aphantasia as well, and it certainly makes calculations a bit harder. I'll often use the analysis tool on chess.com to check my work

Sounds like a blast, even though I prefer chess.com
I'm in!

I remember when I first got on reddit, it was still bigger than lemmy is now, but it still felt small enough that commenting actually felt worthwhile. Definitely excited to be here. Tryna engage as much as possible so people feel there's a community to join

Like others said, this is excellent. I also always just used reddit to stay informed, and it wasn't always the best at doing that. I really like this cut the bullshit approach

I like to listen to books like these to fall asleep and just started The Thief Lord. I fell asleep before the end of the first chapter, but so far I'm enjoying it as much as I did as a kid

I hope so, I really enjoyed the first one, so sitting through 2h20m of setup just to not get an ending was a bit of a slap in the face. Especially since it was really just starting to get going

Where I live we never had school buses, so I was always dropped off at school and would walk home. I used to think it was odd to have a school bus pick kids up, though that was before I realized how fucked car centricity is

I know this is going against the grain here, but I felt it was way too bloated and referential. The cliffhanger was just insult to injury.
That said, the parts that were good, were fantastic, I just wish they weren't buried in quippy nonsense
