What's one thing I can get/do to make my first "adult" apartment a bit nicer?

Move in is the next few weeks. I've lived on my "own" (roommate I never interacted with) for a couple months my last semester of college, but that was a temporary setup whereas I'm hopefully moving out for good this time. Bear in mind that the place has window/wall A/C and electric heating. Things I'm already considering: - Drain guard - Bidet - Cold brew coffee maker - Rice cooker - Space heater? I'd like to keep the temp largely down during the winter to save money while warming up the part of the place I'm in - Key for washer/dryer Things I already have: - Most furniture - Air fryer - Seltzer water thingy - Meal prep containers General advice is also welcome!

Apparently it is not normal to constantly worry about failing to notice incremental shifts in one's moral principles such that one arrives at a repugnant perspective without realizing it  A heavily internalized OCD (I know there's "pure O" but there's discourse online about how that's a misleading term) seems to fit a lot of my behaviors. I have pretty frequent intrusive thoughts, heavily developed mental regimens I use to weather and regulate them, and then intrusive thoughts and doubts about *having* intrusive thoughts and doubts, which feels like it shouldn't be allowed. Anybody else have stuff like this???

PSA: Your Credit Karma credit score is basically fake

Technically this is more of a /c/finance type beat, but since it's important info for all US Americans I figured I'd post here to reach more people. Anyway, the credit score Credit Karma and some banks like Capital One give uses the VantageScore 3.0 model. The problem is that no lender, rental management company, or institution of substance actually uses it, and it can be off by 60 points or more from the one that they actually do use--your FICO score, with FICO 8 being the most commonly used score. Thankfully, you can see it for free using the below methods, differing on which Credit Bureau's score you'd like to see. They should all be within a few points of each other, but it never hurts to check. - Experian: Sign up through experian.com. You can also pay an exorbitant monthly fee to see all three bureau's scores, or just use the 7 day free trial. - Equifax: Sign up through myfico.com. - TransUnion: The trickiest one--I think the only "free option" that isn't a complimentary feature from a credit card is the 7 day free trial from Experian. Thanks to this I found out my credit score is actually ~20 points higher than what Credit Karma said it was. For my mom, it was ~50 points higher! That opens up a lot of doors for her in terms of balance transfers and CC debt consolidation. Shoutout to Amerikkka for having this dumbshit system

HMO vs. PPO for baby trans

I just got access to the benefit info for my new jobert and want to start figuring it out even if I won't be eligible for a couple more months. There's a Gold PPO and a Platinum HMO, and the company takes care of the premium for both. The HMO is cheaper in pretty much every way (4x cheaper therapy for instance) but I know you're a lot more restricted in terms of staying in network and needing referrals. If I go for an HMO will I have a harder time getting HRT? I'm not really looking at any surgeries in the next year, so I could switch to a PPO later if there were any network issues with that.

Anyone else kinda annoyed you can't play your steam games on mobile?

I know not every game has a mobile port, and this the way it works for some other media too buying a physical copy of a book doesn't entitle you to an ebook version and vice versa. On the other hand, a steam game can be played on Windows, MacOS, or Linux without restriction provided it's ported or works with Proton. In any event it still rubs me the wrong way to know I bought Slay the Spire on Steam, and Steam has a mobile presence, and StS has a mobile port, but that still doesn't end with me playing StS on mobile without buying it again. Hopefully the recent court stuff with Epic and Apple will mean Valve could start putting up their own mobile launcher on iOS, as I imagine they wouldn't see just Android as worth the effort.

How does Kamala lose in November?

Running low on freelancing projects so I figured I'd waste my time with a little speculation. The current political zeitgeist seems to be that it's Kamala's race to lose by virtue of the abortion issue and not being Biden or Trump. Polling is only just now starting to trickle in, but assuming she's got the edge right now, how does it go wrong? Here are some scenarios: 1. **She picks Josh Shapiro as her VP and loses Michigan.** Shapiro might help her lock in Pennsylvania, but he also "stands out among the current field of potential running mates as being egregiously bad on Palestine," as David Klion [writes](https://web.archive.org/web/20240724154000/https://newrepublic.com/article/184151/one-vice-president-ruin-democratic-unity-josh-shapiro) for The New Republic. That might be enough to lose the support of Michigan's significant Arab-American population and hand it to Trump, which is a big deal as many of the Democratic roads to electoral victory run through Michigan. 2. **Republican lawsuits gum up the ballot.** While legal experts have generally [dismissed](https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/07/biden-deadline-democratic-nomination/678960/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=the-atlantic&utm_content=edit-promo) the possibility that efforts to challenge Brandon's dropout and swap to Kamala, this wouldn't be the first time that such experts have been caught with their pants down on significant legal rulings. Even if these lawsuits don't go anywhere, they could depress turnout by causing confusion and enabling the spread of misinformation in swing states. 3. **Trump forces J.D. Vance off the ticket and gets a VP with more rizz.** Ironically, this would open the GOP up to the type of litigation from point 2, but with actual legal credence since the nomination process is complete. Might still be worth it since the dude seems to be a charisma vacuum. 4. **Kamala calls someone a honkey or cracker on a hot mic and white moderates freak out.** This is my just for fun, pretty much. But like, what if? Thoughts??

Putting privacyguides.org in the sidebar?

I noticed "The Ultimate FOSS Guide for Android" was very out of date and thought I'd try to make a new version with more current suggestions. But after a while I realized most of the time I was just copying off PrivacyGuides.org which has a pretty robust set of FOSS offerings with an unsurprising focus on privacy. There are still some things it doesn't cover like Android launchers and keyboards, but we could have an additional sidebar post with more a la carte suggestions. Thoughts?
