I have to use cisco webex, and while the executable is not available for linux, I can say that the web interface is equally outright awful.
The audio system doesn't work if you don't have a microphone (at least on firefox, if the microphone permission is denied, you don't get to hear anything).
The video disables itself randomly for bandwidth problems, when nor me nor others are having connection hiccups and then takes its sweet time to come back up.
There is no way to set the webcam as primary "panel" and sometimes the presenter uses it to share hand-written notes. Combined with the fact that half the time the presenter is also sharing their computer screen, the cam's vibile area is so tiny the text is unreadable.
Finally, the mute button gives a false sense of security: the host of the session can force-enable them from their side.
This feature was highlighted in an incident I escalated with my course to the privacy office at my university.
A professor activated all the microphones and there was this girl crying her eyes off while arguing with her parents. I hope she never realised what happened, she was already too much shaken to handle being humiliated publicly.
I at least managed to find a workaround for the microphone: right after the audio transmission has started, if the microphone permission is removed, the stream halts for a second, then continues without any problems. The mic comes on, but after this trick it stays off as intended and no force-enable can do anything about it.

In my opinion that's an honest take on the problem.
I mean, I've seen people link to posts from the same blog multiple times, like the Drew Devault one's, and the subject was used for a normal discussion, whereas there are users like Laura here that judging from the past posts never really contributed, or did so just with 2 posts that people regarded as interesting, on a total of 100 downvoted below zero.
Then there are cases like SourceCode.
He does post a lot of entries from viva64 (which I admit I do not have simpathy for) and cppcast, but he also appears to have a couple of saved posts and moderates three communities.
While those blogs are a bit spammed for me, he also appears to be an active user, not just a spambot.
What take would you get in cases like these?

I haven't done extensive researches on this topic, apart from opening articles from different sites and comparing the content, but I'm pretty sure up to this point anything hydrogen-derived used as fuel doesn't scale up well when comparing production/storage/transport costs to energy output.
While, if true, the fact that this powerpaste material is a giant leap forward for secure storage and transport, I've seen on a couple other sites that there's still some concern regarding production.
Does the yelded energy surpass the amount of work spent while heating and simultaneously compressing the goo?
I have another doubt as well. If the paste needs water to react and produce energy, how much water is needed?
Like, would I need a 50 liters tank in an hypotetical goo-powered car to travel a significant distance? Or is the amount of required water so small that it justifies the affirmation made on usage for drones?
I really hope we can find an alternative to classic fuels, but I would like it to be better than the actual sources, not worse, for the environment.

Hi there rodents, admins specifically this time, I don't know if what I'm going to question was intended to be this way, as the lemmy website ui is supposed to work with javascript enabled, or not. Just 10 minutes ago I read that the federation was enabled so I wanted to try it out. I found a post from [@dess_ds9](https://ds9.lemmy.ml/u/dess_ds9) and I tried to open its profile. The page opens without a beat, showing its profile, but If I try to click its identifier with javascript disabled, instead of loading https://ds9.lemmy.ml/u/dess_ds9 I'm redirected to https://lemmy.ml/https://ds9.lemmy.ml/u/dess_ds9 . The same happens with communities. I noticed this behaviour because I usually navigate the web with javascript disabled. Is it supposed to be this way? If it's not a bug, could it be made to work even without javascript? Thanks again for your work!

Well, it seems you found a solution to our problems, though I would have liked to see something working in traditional vpns as well!
I waited for a bunch of more tech savy friends to come online and then we started thinkering.
We all had our problems at first, not because of zerotier but because of our system configs.
I, for example had to add broadcast and multicast input rules in iptables (I perfer having iptables block what is not used), then I had to add those routes to the virtual nic. The latter was more of a pain to discover, but fortunately tcpdump helped me find out when packets were travelling or not.

Some of the others had some technical difficulties with the windows network settings: the "fix" which is discussed in the zerotier knowledge base was making their zerotier nic go bonkers.
It turns out, for some unknown reason, windows was deleting the netmask after the priority was raised for the nic. They just put it back in place.
Now, since both broadcast and multicast work (tried with tcpdump and multiple games), we tried installing nitroshare to share files as initially wanted and it worked like a charm!

Let me explain: today me and my friends decided we finally needed to setup a vpn to play lan games, expose services like synchronized film streaming etcetera. As per my advice, since low latency and ease of use are a must, we settled on wireguard. After the vpn was on, we realized some games could not be played due to them strictly using broadcast to do participants discovery/connection. A shame, but we'll just play something else. Then someone proposed we search a solution to ease the pain we have in sharing files. Since half my friends have a slow internet connection, uploading to a server and then downloading back would require too much time, so we opted for direct transfer programs. alternativeto.net proposed programs as lanXshare, dukto R6, nitroshare, all of which unfortunately make use of broadcast to find peers on the network. As already discovered, broadcast doesn't work in the vpn, so we have no idea what software we could use that doesn't connect to the cloud, nor forces us to have a share service on the server which hosts the wireguard central node. I would like to avoid using ssh or ftp on everyone pc as well, since the majority of them uses windows and only have basic computer skills. Does anyone have a program or even a tip which could help? Thanks in advance!

The closest thing I found was the dvd of the film (not what I'm interested in) which also happens to be marked as "not available". Not even streaming sites know of it apparently, and the only youtube episodes were DMCA'd into oblivion. In the end I settled with torrent, which only helped partially though (aka beggars can't be choosers, not too much at least). After peeking into demonoid, ilcorsaronero, limetorrents and piratebay, I found only one working magnet for the first season of the tv series, dubbed in english. Hi again rodents, I don't know if this was already answered; seems like it hasn't been asked here on lemmy, but due to slow internet I can't properly check on github right now. I tried manually pointing to a community but I got the name wrong and the request hung for many seconds (up to 30-40 seconds, I think), before giving me back a 504 Gateway timeout. At first I tought it was due to my connection, but then I tried querying with the right name, and the initial response was way faster than before. I tried again with another community. Same behaviour. Oddly enough, the behaviour follows when trying with usernames. I loaded the Deep Space 9 instance and did the same magick trick. I again got the same behaviour. Is it how lemmy is supposed to handle an inexistent entity or is it a non-implemented feature (or a bug, idk) ?
Hi rodents, since two weeks at max I started seeing new people posting on international communities (aka communities not strictly linked to a language or nation) in other languages than english. While I'm ok with seeing multiple languages in the main page, I personally think it's not so ok to post not in english in communities like c/asklemmy, c/technology or others. I'm not expecting to understand anything when snooping in c/espanol or c/hispagatos because they are not international communities, in the sense that they chose to specifically target spanish-speaking people and It's completely understandable. It is their choice and that must be respected. The same could be said if anyone wandered in c/italy and tried to understand the couple of posts in there, without knowing a word of italian. Still, when I came across the new posts made by a newly subscribed rodent, written in persian (I think that's the language, another user said it was persian, I'm not sure), I must admit I felt they were out of place because only a handful of people might be able to understand them without a translator. From what I saw, other people downvoted them, probably for the same reason. I'm conflicted because on one hand I'm all for niches, foreign cultures, local communities and so on, but on the other hand I'm also in favour of internationalization and since english was chosen for us for quite some years now, I feel in those communities we should try to stick to it, for the sake of understandability. Am I too strict about this? After all, no rules were put in place to say something about this. Maybe I just need to shut up and use a translator, I don't know. What is your opinion on the matter?
Hi, I would like to encrypt some files I have on my pcs. The intention is to encrypt backup otp codes, curriculums, purchases; personal documents in general. The content should add up to just a handful of MBs. My current setup is made of a sync node which leverages nextcloud webdav access, my phone and my workstation. Ideally, I would like to be able to have the files encrypted on every storage, and then be able to decrypt them just for their use. Something like a virtual file system would be fantastic. I've read about pgp, but I'm not 100% sure it is the best solution. Are there any "universally" accepted alternatives? If pgp is the right way to go, how should I manage access to the files? Should I use a keypair for every end-device and encrypt the files with both pubkeys or not? Pardon me for all these questions, but I'm a bit confused.
This is just a curiosity: does anyone here run torbrowser in a wayland environment? I tried multiple times but I just can't get it to work. Specifying env variables to make it use the xorg-wayland adapter doesn't work. If someone has succeeded, would he/she be so gentle to share his/her solution? For informations, I run archlinux with the mainline kernel and sway as my desktop.
