D-Bus overview

This is an amazing article for folks interested in the low level IPC dbus. systemd, network manager, and or applications are leveraging dbus and with the new dbusbroker I expect more and more applications leverage it. It's MASSIVELY confusing at first, but this is such a great article I hope it helps anyone interested in thr low level communications of userspace level linux applications.

  • Owncast Self Promotion Allowed?
  • ozoned ozoned Now 66%

It's a fair point, but I don't think I'm worthy, hence why I asked. Lol

i'm on beehaw and they don't just create communities, hence why I asked here. Seems like I'm getting a number if uovotes, so not sure if others are interested in my question or woukd like to see folks posting when they go live here. Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

Obviously wondering mod and communities thoughts as well. This is all of our space imo.

  • Seeing folks give season greetings to Linix gamers made me wonder if self promotion is allowed here? I, as well as a few other Linux gamers, stream to our Owncasts, which have Federation connectivity, but wondering if we should be posting here when we go live on Owncast to spread the word. If that's ok? To think of a few, Samsai, Hatnix, Hamishptb, and myself only stream to our own private Owncasts. Again you can follow folks through federation, or get desktop notifications on go live, but I personally like the Firefox Owncast Extension. Either way, Happy Holidays or even just a happy regular day to everyone!

I host my own Joplin and wife and I sync our notes to it and we love it. She's non-technical and has no issues figuring it out, but we use minimal features. It did just get the ability to draw pictures as well, but we use that mostly just for the kids to play with.

At this point just get a rasbperry pi, or some similar device, and run it as a regular computer. Firefox, ublock origin, don't worry about ads, and turn it into a machine that is capable of soooooooo much more. Hell, any PC will work. Steam Deck, NUC, that old laptop you have laying around? Been running little NUCs on my TVs for years and so happy I don't have to put up with that nonsense.

NetworkManager setting "nameserver ::1" to resolv.conf no matter my settings.
  • ozoned ozoned Now 100%

If you're getting DHCP, it could also be the DHCP server that's giving you this address. In a standard house you'll not set a specific IP address, but your router will give you one, and normally your home computers will also use your router for DNS. So potentially your router is setting this, but that'd be a misconfigured router really, because your router shouldn't be telling your computer to look at local loopback for DNS requests.

    2
  • NetworkManager setting "nameserver ::1" to resolv.conf no matter my settings.
  • ozoned ozoned Now 100%

Your /etc/resolv.conf is generated by your NetworkManager, which you know. Seeing the settings of NM can be confusing, and I had to try to remind myself. You can manually set these in NM or as someone else stated, systemd-resolved might be doing this as well. If you're changing this inside of NM and you're still seeing that, then something is changing it, again systemd-resolved is the most likely culprit but there are other applications that do DNS caching such as unbound, dnsmasq, etc.

You can try seeing NM with the nmcli command such as the following:

    $ nmcli connection show Wired\ connection\ 1

Note that "Wired\ connection\ 1" is the name of my connection, but yours might vary. If you hit TAB though a few times it should give you options.

You'd then look for an option like ipv6.dns and if it's not set you'll see "--".

However that "nameserver ::1" is just indicating the ipv6 loopback so on an ipv6 address your NM is saying look for something listening locally.

If you don't like looking at nmcli you could also check nm-connection-editor command:

    $ nm-connection-editor

And that opens a GUI for editting connections.

There's also nmtui for NM's terminal user interface.

  • What can we do to keep the web open?
  • ozoned ozoned Now 100%

Use tech and services outside the big tech. Just Fedi over standard social. Use Peertube instead of Youtube.

    Run Firefox.

Set up your own servers for yourself or start a community. Matrix, Mastodon, Lemmy, etc.

Run SearXNG as your search or help others by hosting.

If you can work of free and open source code that helps decentralize and give the power back to the people or create something new. Even if you can code, learning a project and helping others with it or helping create docs, etc.

Spread the word, but don't be annoying. Help less technical folks get decentralized.

It's very difficult and can be disheartening, but you don't have to cold turkey all of it. Each drip in the bucket helps until we're all united and become a tidal wave.

When all the power is centralized that's when those central players think they can do whatever they want.

Good day all. I'm on Fedora 38, firefox-114.0-1.fc38.x86_64. Whenever I go to beehaw it seems that the Isolated Web Container just starts consuming my entire ram, then swap, essentially halting my system. That other site listed issues, but they're all private now. Anyone else hitting memleaks with the isolated web containers? I do have quite a few extensions, but I was hitting this even in private browser mode with the extensions off and Chromium doesn't appear to suffer any issues. So I'm thinking this is a memleak int he firefox Isolated Web Containers. EDIT: Just tried downgrading to firefox-111.0.1-1.fc38.x86_64 and while the Isolated Web containers does take up a lot of memory is seems to balance out.

I remember reading on Reddit that folks were experiencing oddities with their battery life. I've been fighting with my battery, though I don't think it's a bad battery it's more that the software thinks the battery is dead and shutting down the system. Does anyone remember how to reset the battery? Something like letting it fully charge, then fully draining it in one session, then fully charging and draining, a few cycles and it's better or something? Anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, etc?

In science we attempt to classify everything. And everything seems to be a subset of something else. Planet is a part of a solar system, solar system is a part of a galaxy, galaxy is part of the universe, universe is a part of our dimension, etc. Obviously there are exceptions to this, rogue planets, but we still consider them contained. I understand the idea of multidimensions is theoretical, but if they exist, do we have a name or even a theory what might contain them?

I was thinking about Kitt Pride, XMen, and her super power to phase through solid objects, yet not sink through the floor or lose her clothes, but just wondering if she was kind of outside of our reality and not actually interacting with the molecules. Which made me wonder, if you weren't interacting with the air molecules, would you make any noise? Whether attempting to talk or what not. I'm guessing the answer is no, but just curious what others thought.

Just finished Alma's Awakening on PC. It seems like a classic NES Metroidvania game. While I'm not a Metroidvania fan, I hate backtracking and losing out on items because I don't have the skills to get things, it makes this approachable because of teleports. Beautiful pixel graphics, controls are floaty but just like original NES games. It's pretty rough, but also has a mode to help those folks, like me, that don't have the time for the hardcore stuff. Even with accessibility enabled it's still pretty tough and a few times I quit and walked away for a bit, but it's just so lovely I had to keep coming back and finish it. Wonderful game if you enjoy classic NES style games. Anyone recommend any other classic NES style games?

SGF just started. What games are folks looking forward to? Also am I the only one that looks at the games and if it doesn't have a Demo I just go on to the next one? if it has a demo then I look at it to see if I'm interested in it. LOVE demos and miss the days when all games had demos and tried to sell themselves to you.
