Perplexity, by [Otto Berkeley](https://www.flickr.com/photos/99194469@N08/30255064393/) >Hidden away at Lorrimore Square in South London is St Paul's Church, which I came across during September's Open House weekend. The church is a small but remarkable Grade II-listed building built in the late 1950s after the original church burned down during the second world war. Replacing the original 19th-century Victorian Gothic style is an innovative post-war design by John Wimbleton of architect practice Woodroffe, Buchanan & Coulter, built from a mixture of brick, copper and rubble stone from the old church. > >I was drawn to the elegance of the triangular motif around the church and the way it represents the importance of the Trinity in Eucharistic worship, but there was also something remarkable about the balance the architecture struck inside the building: an abstract and almost minimalist quality to its structure, and at the same time an atmosphere within the church -- situated on the first floor above a day centre -- that was warm, welcoming and full of character. The Open House staff volunteering at the church were incredibly gracious about allowing me to photograph the interior from every angle, but I kept coming back to this look-up of the church's beautifully geometric roof, which seemed to convey the airy simplicity of the building's structure as well as its progressive design. > >The image was straightforward to shoot -- with the camera resting on the ground, the settings dialled in and the exposures triggered using a shutter remote -- and equally straightforward to edit. Seven exposures were blended in Photoshop using luminosity masking, balancing darker exposures for the light streaming through the windows and brighter exposures to bring out the rich detail within the roof's steep timber. Once the exposures were blended, I used the Pen Tool to create a selection of the concrete frame, desaturating its warmer tones and then using my brighter exposures at a low opacity with the blend modes set to Soft Light and Screen. This helped to reinforce the bold framework within the image and created a nice contrast against the darker and more detailed texture in the timber. > >Colour-grading the image was a mixture of Curves and Levels adjustments, with Colour Balance and Selective Colour adjustments to find the right combination of yellow, red and magenta. It was important to me to bring out the warm tones within the roof, but I was also wary of the image becoming an overload of red and orange, and used a Gradient Map to add a hint of dark blue in the shadows to offset this. I loved the animation for GOT with the pop up mechanical castles! It also helped to give an overview of where the action would be for that episode, as well as looking really cool!
Also House of the Dragon with the embroidery being stitched (very apt for 2 female protagonists) and the mythology/world building of Valyria....

(btw, I recently saw a Barn Owl out hunting just before dusk, flying around the moors. We were side by side with him/her flying, and me driving, then we pulled over to watch from a distance. It was amazing, I've seen one before as a white ghost appearing, then disappearing just as quickly, as I shit my pants. This time tho I got to see the markings and it's face quite clearly....great stuff!)

Not too bad.....I'm mainly the only one posting on collage although the lovely Eugenia Loli has posted there too, there is a printmaker Julien_Catenese who posts their work on printmaking which is awesome, and several people are posting OC to abstract photography which I'm really pleased about!
I'm also making posts for !invertebrates@mander.xyz and !nudibranchs@mander.xyz, while trying to not burn myself out, or get too frustrated by lemmys photo upload limit (which can be really stressful when I want to make a Mega Post with plenty of pictures) .... Essentially, I'm just trying to amuse myself first and foremost, maybe learn something new 😀

This is going to be a long comment.... 😀
All time favourite note is probably Jasmine, but not a nice fresh Jasmine, something a bit more indolic and sultry. Also I like Vanilla, but again not sweet, a proper vanilla pod scent with something mixed in to make it interesting (Mona di Orio has a beautiful Vanilla fragrance that also has boozy notes of Rum, Orange and Wood- she envisioned a trade ship carrying them as goods when creating it)
Also I love Labdanum, it helps to form the back bone of 'Oriental' perfumes. It lasts for ever and is deep and rich. Plus Mimosa, but so far only in Frederic Malles Une Fleur de Cassie- it is glorious with a underlying something. In a review someone said it was like a beautiful garden, full of flowers with a dead body buried in it! I think you can probably sense a theme that I don't like pretty fragrance, I like something a bit dark and skanky...
I also love the smell of soil, CBIhatePerfume has a great one called Wild Hunt, it smells exactly like a resinous pine forest, complete with damp soil and mushrooms. He doesn't create 'normal' perfumes, they're more like entire sensory experiences that transport you elsewhere. Patchouli is another favourite, it's grassy and slightly chocolatey too. Musks are another some can be gloriously filthy!
Favourite perfumes....? There are so many to choose from! I have probably around 100 different one by now, some are decants and large sample sizes (which makes it more affordable) others are full bottles purchased when the £ was stronger than the Euro, and before Brexit...
I have favourite perfume houses, including Frederic Malle (his perfumes are amazing and use quality ingredients and lots of natural oils), Serge Lutens (his fragrances tend to be dark and opulent- checkout his website for some French Gothic fun), Guerlain is a really old perfume house their La Art et La Matiere line is wonderful. Also Parfums d'Empire, Mona di Orio, Sonoma Scent Studio, Papillon Perumes.... Chanel Exclusifs and some Dior
Me and the bf are intending to visit Paris soon, I can guarantee we will be our respects to Serge Lutens Boutique and Maison Guerlain!
edit....I forgot Rose, Ylang, Incense, Sandalwood, some Ouds....the list is endless

I could spend ages looking at all the detail and trying to interpret any hidden meaning/messages/symbolism in his work...They have an ancient (alien) civilisation feel
I also can't get over the scale of the prints 'Precession' at 96x336 inches and still classed as an ongoing work!
It's like being immersed in a temple or shrine with all the ceramic 'artifacts' in the installations, plus the monolith having echoes of standing stones/kabba/2001 Space Odyssey. It feels like he's creating his own mythology.... I can see why you're drawn to his work, thanks for sharing 👍

Created my account 3 years ago so I could still access one of the piracy subs in case they were banned from reddit, they used to have an alt community on lemmy.ml......
I came over properly during the reddit blackout, set up the communities I most wanted to see over here (that didn't exist already), and have stayed ever since
I like the fact that the posts have (generally) sensible comments, without 1000 replies of inane drivel to sift through, overall it feels like a nice quiet corner of the internet where I can recognise usernames and have a brief chat, then be on my way
