Well, various instances block each other, and mods and admins are not all on the same page. And just like it's important to have independent instances, it's important that single communities don't dominate either.

I think a better solution would be to make a github suggestion to visually merge crossposted threads.

Yeah, crossposting could definitely use some improvements. I noticed these threads are missing that "cross-posted to" notation as well. You may be right that it's only for link posts.

The links just need to have a “no follow” attribute (which is something that Lemmy could add, if they haven’t already).

Sounds like a good suggestion to make on github. I don't know how easy it would be to do that for only reddit links, and I'm not sure how the devs would feel about that.

    Also, from your link:

The correlation for the number of “dofollow” backlinks is a little bit weaker than that of the total number of backlinks.

Here’s what Tim said about this:

This could be an indication that Google values some nofollowed links from strong pages more than followed links from weak pages. #whoknows Tim Soulo Tim Soulo, CMO Ahrefs

Take this finding with a large pinch of salt. The primary aim of this study was not to analyze the impact of nofollowed vs. followed links and as such, we didn’t make any effort to isolate this factor.

But even if we assume that nofollowed links have no direct impact on SEO, they can still have an indirect impact because: They help diversify your link profile

    Natural backlink profiles are diverse.

A way to merge crossposts visually would be nice. You could check on github if there's a suggestion for that already.

SEO ranking is relative. IE: if reddit and lemmy have the same post title, the reddit one will show up higher since it has a higher domain authority.

I think this is also the main reason why youtube videos show up as top search results instead of the same video on youtube-alternative sites.

I think your previous question was clearer, so I'll just link to it: https://sh.itjust.works/post/25867272/14197383

    My response:

I’m no SEO expert, but search engines penalize websites for gaming the system. I’ve already read someone suggest that Google is not sure what to do with the fediverse because it already looks like spam, and that may be why it doesn’t show up often in search results. That’s beyond my knowledge though.

It reminds me of people who added Invidious links back in the day, but over time the individious instances would go down, preventing people from knowing which content was initially linked.

Yes, the archive.today links have that risk, but not the archive.org ones. Also, you can manually modify archive.today links to show the original link.

With the way this seems to works, can’t we just create thousands of links to let’s say Lemmy.world from all the other instances, to boost the LW domain authority? Shouldn’t all the crossposts links be taken into account in this calculation?

That might be one reason lemmy.world has a relatively high domain authority.

And if yes, then do 3 links here really make a difference?

Your 3 links won't make a difference. Starting a trend and spreading the word will.

Well you still have the direct links, so it doesn't make a difference.

You can use the Wayback machine addon to easily get archived links https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/wayback-machine_new/.

    And a bookmarklet for archive.today:

    javascript:void(open('https://archive.today/?run=1&url='+encodeURIComponent(document.location)))

  • I did a search from shitjustworks for "reddit die" and did not find https://lemmy.world/c/watchredditdie so I made https://sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie (unnecessarily). This should really not happen. When someone makes a community there should be a "ping" sent out to notify all other federated instances. And from what I know, if I post to !sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie only users on sh.itjust.works will see the posts until other people from other instances randomly come across it somehow and subscribe? This really needs to be improved.

I saw some weird pro-reddit content on other reddit-themed communities and then !snoocalypse@lemmy.ml went into archive mode, so I decided to make this to keep it clean from any reddit shills lurking in the dark. I'll start by posting some historical content. By the way, anyone know what might be the most anti-reddit lemmy instance? I'd hate to find out that shitjustworks likes reddit and doesn't want a "watch reddit die" community on their instance.

**Moving to the fediverse** Hi guys, are you familiar with the fediverse? It's an open-source reddit-alternative that is owned and run by no one. So it doesn't suffer from the threat of a single hostile entity making drastic, unwanted changes, as we recently saw with reddit, resulting in the side-wide protests. It would be great to have your subreddit join the fediverse! If you do, I would suggest not using lemmy.world, as it's already the largest instance and it's better to spread things out so no one has too much control. Info: * https://fedi.tips/ * https://www.makeuseof.com/what-is-the-fediverse-and-can-it-decentralize-the-web/ * Graphic: How federation works https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/14ier24/for_anyone_wondering_how_lemmy_works_and_is/ * https://lemmyverse.net/communities - explorer * Awesome Lemmy Instances has a list where you can see how many instances block/are blocked by each other https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances. This can help you pick an instance to create your community on. * https://join-lemmy.org/instances - Click on an instance, and look at the right sidebar. It will list local rules of the instance. You can also browse the "local" feed to see what kind of communities live on that specific server. You can even create your own instance like /r/futurology and /r/piracy did https://futurology.today, https://lemmy.dbzer0.com. If you do, you may want to seed your community with content https://futurology.today/post/166237. Once you make a community on Lemmy you could sticky a post in your sub to let your community know, and/or create an automod sticky in each thread.

I was homeschooled previously with a small group of other children and we fart in class all the time. Now I'm in public school for high school and no one is farting. I was very sheltered and public school is like a whole new world for me, so I don't know what the norms are. I've been holding it in but my stomach hurts and it leaks out anyway. I don't understand how there are so many more people in high school and yet zero farts...
