  • noticing it more and more. i like to play retro video games but i don't actually do it that often. 5 years or so ago i got a SNES mini and a playstation classic and one of those anbernac handhelds in the span of a year or two, so I was spending a lot of time reading lists online of games people thought were notable, underrated, good games for genre newbies, etc. i have been playing games again recently so i have again been looking up games and the difference in content you get now is astounding. five years ago if you searched something like "best nes RPGs" or "obscure ps1 games" you would find lovingly handcrafted lists and articles by people who were passionate about it and wanted to share, make readers laugh, or ignite interest in something. Now there's like 20 different sites that each have ai generated "best (genre) games for (system)" lists for every system and genre combination possible, with generic game descriptions, list orders likely cribbed from one of those ranking sites, and nonsensical filler copy ("every RPG enthusiast loves the N64" type words just mashed together) photographs are also no fun to take or look at anymore, accelerated by new ai image generation but honestly ever since smartphone cameras started automatically editing the shot out of your picture before it even showed it to you. when i was a kid i wanted to be an author, glad i just got depressed and useless and never pursued it, considering what that space looks like today. internet was a mistake

I remember some people were mad at Karl for stealing the speed running video shtick and not sticking his neck out for his buddy. I don't know anything about Karl personally tho, I just love the speed run cheating investigation videos. They are always really interesting intestigation stories and also the technical stuff isn't too beyond my comprehension (like I also like to watch displaced gamers and retro game mechanics explained, but some of the videos I don't actually understand because I don't really know how code works lol)

Karl Jobst essentially started making the exact same kind of video to rwhitegoose for a couple years, so that's a good one to check out. I like the stuff he makes now too but he literally did a bunch of "history of a specific GoldenEye level world records" videos too.

I don't know where to find it but he did record a little clip after all that came out where he said he's not racist anymore and he learned not to be racist because he had normal interactions with non-white people at the local Tim Horton's lol

Like a 35 year old dude concerned about the "Jewish question" on his discord for years would somehow have his worldview shaken only a month after it came out, and the instigating factor would be a brown guy holding the door open for him at a Toronto Timmy's lol

I still watch his videos sometimes because nobody is making that kind of content about less popular n64 games, but I watch them in a way that YouTube doesn't recognize for algorithm or revenue purposes

  • [Effort] Sinistar (1983) was a phenomenal game for its time.

You should check out the trs-80 game draconian. Its like bosconian but with defender (you rescue people from the bases) and sinistar (you are chased by a boss enemy if you take too long.) If you like the atmosphere of sinistar you will also like draconian. The boss enemy is indestructible so the feeling of knowing its coming is really exciting. This game absolutely blew my mind when I played it as a kid in a similar way to sinister.

You can download it and other trs-80 ROMs here: https://colorcomputerarchive.com/repo/Disks/Games/

I don't know anything about trs-80 emulators, although I have played it on emulator in the past, I mainly played it on the actual hardware when I was a kid. Given what you wrote here I would really recommend checking it out!

i remember it was in black and white. i distinctly remember there was a part of the movie where stand-up ramen shops and been made illegal, so the protagonist goes to a clandestine ramen shop. also there was a scene where the protagonist had to use the bathroom really bad, but the toilets had all been closed off or deactivated, and because he couldn't bring himself to relieve himself on the floor or whatever, he passed out. also there was definately a mission impossible 1 type scene where the protagonist was in a room, i don't remember what happened in the scene, but at the end of the scene the room was revealed to be a fake room like on a soundstage or such, with the walls being hastily put up prop walls to convince him he was in a real place. the whole movie had kind of a Kafka's the trial vibe, but i do not remember what the movie was about, just those scenes. anyone know what movie it was?

male presenting anglo canadian here, every interaction i have ever had is in some way tinged with white supremacy and male privilege. i've been treated better and assumed by default to be more competent than non-whites pretty much every day. also like have you ever talked to another white person? if a white person or man talks to someone they assume shares their values they say the worst shit. i thought it was funny when libs were condemning trumps "locker room talk" defense like it's so unbelievable to them that men would discuss sexual assault like that in a male space. "i've never heard anything like that in a locker room." you are lying. most white men are thinking and saying the worst possible things at any given moment. non-white people can tell by the way they are treated by white people and western society that white supremacy is the thread that binds the western world together. but if you look like them, they will just tell you straight up their terrible ideas assuming you will agree. if you cant figure it out when you actively benefit from it daily, if you cant notice that you're being held to a different standard by other white people daily, if you cant figure it out when they LOOK FOR EXCUSES TO TELL YOU, than i dunno how much self-crit is gonna help. at that point it seems like an empathy problem if you identify as an anarchist or a communist and also identify with your whiteness, you missed something, probably a lot of things, along the way. try to be more perceptive geez. love to my comrades of every skin colour and gender identity, death to the first world and any framework including race used to justify it
