Why do some people defend the billionaires and capitalism?

I think decentralization of power is a nice feature too. Billionaires are power centers outside of the government, judiciary, or military. They exist as a result of lax control on the markets by the government. In countries without capitalism and property rights, the billionaires are the government and the judiciary and the military. So, even though it might seem like nationalizing their wealth would decrease inequality, if there aren't good safeguards for decentralizing government power, it would result in a less equal society.

Part of the existence of billionaires is the ability to actually determine which money is theirs. In autocratic governments, you can't really say who owns what because you never know what the government might decide to take.

I don't defend billionaires, I think power should be spread more fairly, but eliminating them via the government needs to be done wisely in order to maintain decentralization.

I met a researcher that was measuring swimmer sweat. To do it he had to patch part of their body with a waterproof detector. Spoiler alert, they do!

This is written as if it is bad news, but it's good news right? Investment in fossil fuel is slowing and renewables is increasing.

I don't completely understand the focus on bank financing. Banks will finance profitable projects in countries around the world. It's the job of governments to make fossil fuel project unprofitable. The financing is a symptom, not the cause.

Wow, thanks for the reply! I guess it must be a problem on my end. I was playing with kodi on a raspberry pi,, so I'm not surprised, but really helpful to know that it's not the downloader.

The lies trying to save face when problems were first disclosed shows a massive difference in culture. SpaceX livestreams blowing up rockets. Boeing dismisses and delays when there is a problem with their ship.

It's a polymer just like synthetic rubber. It isn't like other natural products. Wood can rot because it's made of cellulose, but rubber can't. Nothing eats it.

  • I haven't seen a thread on this in a while. I have been going with top day for a while, but it can be hit or miss. Other sorts don't seem to display as good in terms of balancing quality and quantity. What is your preferred sort for your main feed? Edit: Realizing that the people who sort new commented before the hot/top/active people, haha

I feel like the CPC is trying to import the American constant election news cycle to Canada.

I'm curious what products and services everyone uses. I like trying out new services, but it seems like the big banks are pretty effective at squashing competition. I'll go first: Chequing - BMO Savings - Wealthsimple Investing - Questrade with Passiv Credit cards - BMO, Costco, Amazon I have tried Brim (credit card) and Koho (kind of a chequing account), but eventually dropped them because they couldn't effectively replace BMO. I'm interested to know everyone's experiences with their banks and other financial service providers. Edit: This thread has been amazing! Thanks for all the replies!

Why is this sub just CBC news stories? Does a bot add them all? They are mostly empty with no comments. Makes for a strange feed. Edit: I think I just need to figure out which way to sort my feed. Sorting by hot gives me almost all CBC. Edit 2: CBC is great. I am commenting on the state of c/Canada, not the quality of CBC
