In my view, it's a stop gap measure. The real issue is the lifetime appointments. We just had one president choose 3 justices, who all get lifetime appointments. That is beyond insane, and if packing the courts right now will help alleviate that imbalance I think it should be advocated for. Of course in the long term we will want term limits, or maybe some sort of rotation system, but for now I think that's the most politically effective way forward.

If ActivityPub can't survive Meta, it was never going to succeed in the first place

  • Corporations don't just sit out on new technologies, and no matter how hard you try you can't force them to. Defederating from Meta's new project preemptively is naive, and will not do much of anything. Protocols are going to be adopted by corporations, whether we like it or not. SMTP, LDAP, HTTP, IP and 802.11 are all examples of that. If it ends up that meta is able to destroy the fediverse simply by joining it, that is a design flaw on OUR end. Something would then clearly need to be different in order to prevent future abuse of the protocol. FOSS is propped up by corporations. By *for profit corporations*. If you want to stop those corporations from killing projects, you put safety guards up to make sure that doesn't happen. You don't just shut them out and put your head in the sand.

Copyright should not exist. However, under our current economic system, capitalism, it should exist for a short period of time. Probably about 5-10 years.

  • I just realized my county built out trails instead of bike lanes
  • anthoniix anthoniix Now 100%

It's not a cycle path, it's a multi-use path. So anyone can use it, including cyclists. The difference here is that these paths look like sidewalks, and run along major streets/highways.

Think "big sidewalk" that you can cycle on.

  • anthoniix anthoniix Now 100%

Yeah, I wish the trails got built out more as well. I feel like it's a lack of promotion and large gaps between trails that make people not want to use them. Thankfully here they haven't banned e-bikes from trails (yet).

Yeah man, I wish they'd just put up a big street sign or something that said "this is a trail!"

    4
  • Instead of building bikelanes my county has opted for trails, which honestly is not a bad option. Or at the very least, better than nothing. The way they did it was just by turning a lot of the sidewalks into multi use paths, so it makes a lot of sense I didn't notice that I could use them. There's quite a few of them, and it definitely makes me feel safer that I can just ride on the "sidewalk" on a lot of the busy streets. I kind of wish they would advertise this shit more because I literally had no idea, it's like it's hiding in plain site on their website.

Honestly, a lot of people might disagree but, corporate involvement is essential to FOSS projects surviving. The biggest FOSS project on the planet, Linux, is literally propped up by the biggest corporations on the planet.

The only potential issue I see here is maybe Meta forks ActivityPub and it becomes a "Meta Project" or some other fuckery. Outside of that I don't see any major issues with it. If we want ActivityPub to become something greater, we're going to need corporations on board. We have strong protections in place right now with a lot of the stuff that's being used being under strong copyleft licenses, and decentralization by nature is going to allow us to opt out of a lot of the ads and tracking that takes place by being forced to use an official app.

Should I lane split when in slow moving traffic?

I haven't gotten my bike yet, but I've sat through traffic a couple times over the course of this week and I've been thinking. Once I do get on the road with my bike, should I try to move around cars in heavy traffic? I've seen people conflicted on whether to do this or not, and it is kind of illegal except in like California lol.

People discredit every type of protest, IRL or not. I think back to every major protest that's happened in response to some major event, and the response every time is "That won't ever work", "You're wasting your time", "Imagine caring about that". This isn't the death of Reddit, not even close to it. Reddit may even get more popular after this. However, that doesn't mean all of this was pointless. The Fediverse continues to grow, and that's genuinely a good thing. Every time a platform fucks up, people give X ActivityPub app a new set of eyes and continue to help developers strengthen these platforms and build up the community. A lot of times the things we want don't happen in 1 big moment, it's a lot of continuous smaller moments that eventually form into something greater. It's going to take a lot of effort to build out a new platform, especially one built off the concept of decentralization. I think we should continue to build our communities here, and do our best to help this platform thrive.

For those experienced in this topic, how would I go about getting a bikelane near my neighborhood?

I live really near a downtown area and it's feasible to bike there. Problem is, there are no bike lanes. While I can 100% just ride on the road, a bike line would help a lot and most likely encourage others to ride on the road too. How would I go about getting a bike lane? Even just a shitty painted lane.
