Haha I get it now. Didn’t pick up the reference at first

Sort of. I started with a blank. So something that has the general outline of a spoon.
I think it’s made with walnut and finished with walnut oil. Started with a blank I bought from flexcut

You can do it. Get a saw. Bass wood is pretty soft so it will be annoying but 100% doable. I do it all the time as I also have wrong sized wood and no power tools. Coping saw is good or I also got a Japanese style saw that works pretty well too

Good call on the gloves. I should have said that first.
Glad i could help. It’s an awesome hobby that take very little to start but is pretty rewarding. Check out some videos on YouTube by a guy Doug Linker. He gives tutorials for a lot of great beginner projects. That’s where I started.
Also, shameless plug. Check out this community

Sorry for not seeing this sooner. I haven’t gotten a hang of the best way to check if anyone replies to comments in Lemmy yet. Your post is the perfect starting wood. Basswood is soft and cheap so you can make cool things and practice pretty easily. I wouldn’t use a pairing knife though. Not to say you can’t but u might wreck that pairingknife. You can get cheap semi decent knives from companies like flexcut or morakniv and then move from there. My first couple knives specifically for wood were a whittlin jack (I think this is by flexcut) and a morakniv 120. Both about 40$ and still hold up great. The first knife I actually used was a Victorinox Swiss Army knife and was just something I had around the house. I think it was 20$. Not built for whittling but will work fine. Honestly use whatever your comfortable with. Once you get into it you will get a better idea of what you want in a knife and n apiece of wood. Happy to help with any advice if u need any. Not an expert but can give you any tips I’ve picked up since I’ve started.

Pick up whittling. This what I did when I was struggling in early covid. The start up cost is low and u can get as creative as u want. Im not very creative so make spoons and give them to family and friends but also make little figures like gnomes, wizards, rabbits, fish.
If u got wood and a semi decent knife, u can start right now
Awesome video by Doug linker on how to make custom blade covers. Probably going to be my next smaller project as right now I have styrofoam on a bunch of nice fixed blades. Pretty janky and not very safe. Will report back on how it works out Also Doug Linker is awesome and his vids are great for beginners

And my axe!
I live in a big city and can’t exactly snap a branch of a random tree or real pick up random sticks from people’s backyards without getting some looks. I’ve ordered off Amazon and Etsy in the past for basswood and walnut that was not bad. Im just curious where other people get resources?

Haven’t heard anyone say anything good about those guys in a while. Maybe I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the advice
I’m currently using Mlem which is great but I want to see what alternatives are out there

No time better to pick it back up then the present. Glad you liked the spoon. It’s one of my more recent pieces and a little more polished than previous iterations.
I will admit, I did take inspiration from someone else’s posts. I’m not artistic enough to make things from scratch so I usually look at what other people make, try and imitate, and maybe add some small personal flair if I can.
I have bought a shit ton of random knives (Helvie, drake, GEC, flexcut, morakniv etc) based on recos from subreddits and youtube videos and I have to say despite how cool they are, I think my favorite go tos are a Victorinox tinker that I redid the edge on and a Remington whittler I bought on eBay because the price was right.
I’m going to keep posting random shit I’ve made until we gain some momentum. Feed back welcome. I’m not very good at this and mostly just imitate other things I see online while working on technique. Here’s some other stuff I made

Holy crap. There’s actually people here. I didn’t know if anyone would actually join this community let alone post
What’s the idea?

I made a couple communities that I use to love on Reddit. I def don’t want the control but I’m hoping the fact that the communities exist may attract more people and someone may come along who is better suited to run the show
r/Astoria was one of my favorite subs from Reddit. I’m hoping to start something similar here. Let the people know what’s happening around the neighborhood Check it out https://sh.itjust.works/c/astorianyc [Astoria](https://sh.itjust.works/c/astorianyc)

The “forgot password” button doesn’t do anything when I click it in safari. Should I try initiating from fire fox?
I almost don’t want to even mess with it. God forbid I get locked out. I just spent so much time subscribing to the communities I like lol
I have been accessing the instance using Firefox and it’s been working great but I wanted to try to log in with safari because that’s the only mobile browser where I can add a website to my Home Screen. I enter my login information and hit login and then I get the spinning circle that spins indefinitely. Has anyone else had this problem?
I’m new to Lemmy and use “new communities” community to find communities I like but every time I click the links in their posts, mlem crashes. Am I doing something wrong? I am patient and so far I’m getting a hang of the app but this constant crashing is annoying. Love the app by the way, I know it’s. A work in progress but is close enough to scratch my Apollo itch

I have 2 community tanks. One has guppies and some random plants.
The other has tetras and some random plants
One has a rabbit snail infestation but I like they way they look som I’m keeping them all
I was part of r/whittling before rexxit and it was my one of my favorite places to browse. I didn’t see anything comparable to that on Lemmy yet so I decided to take a stab at making the first. Here’s a things I made
