"that's what it means to die, to not be able to stop looking at whatever in front of you. Some darn thing placed directly there, with nothing you can do about it such as selecting or changing anything. You can only accept what's put there as is" - Philip K. Dick

IDK I'd want to problematize the assumption that grades are a currency earned through obedience. That may be true at a young age when grades don't matter, or for specific teachers with bad practice, but is not an accurate reflection of grading writ large. Grades are principally a measure of how much learning a student is able to demonstrate.

Like if you show up every day on time and are very friendly to your AP Physics teacher and only speak when spoken to but can't solve any physics problems you're not going to pass that course. Conversely, if you're late and talk in class but can solve every problem you're going to get an A

Watching *El Golpe Blanco* (1975) right now about the attempt for a parliamentary coup by reaction in Chile before the military coup. Flick opens with a shot of Langley and a voiceover from [UK journalist and defector to the GDR John Peet](https://crimereads.com/john-peet-the-spy-who-never-was/) where he just shrugs off "CIA headquarters in Langley near Washington: one of the instruments of US monopoly capital in its global strategy of counterrevolution." Like there's no bullshit, no both sidesing, just plainly calling a spade a spade so refreshing. It's hard to find but you can get links to it here https://www.umass.edu/defa/film/9642. Also, the free streaming service Kanopy has a ton of DEFA flicks to work your way through, all you need is a library card.

Approximately what percent of post-tax income and how many Big Macs could that buy in your area? (No fair counting your union dues haha) Been thinking about it since I suggested a techbro user tithe 10% of his earnings to a local org earlier today. Thinking about how much my org could get done if we had a couple (or even one) techbro interested in clearing their conscience with a 10% tithe. On the other end of the spectrum one of the organizers I support asks members to donate 0.1% of their post-tax income. I think it's noteworthy because nominally it sounds like such an achievable target that most people would struggle to argue they couldn't afford. Me: a little more than 1% of my post-tax income, spread across three orgs - mostly going to mutual aid. It would buy 9-10 Big Macs here.

This was an off-handed remark I came across in Mike Davis' *Late Victorian Holocausts*. I initially thought this might be another example of my incredible Canadian education leaving out our minimizing the significance of a socialist project. I don't know a ton about the Red River Rebellion but I've found it pretty difficult to find any other similar descriptions online of his group as socialists. Is this just a quick hot take by our boy Mikey Davis? Or is this a bird-brained statement? Surely Hexbear knows.

Great documentary from 2005 on war resistance during Vietnam, posing the thesis that the main reason the war closed was due to active and passive resistance at all levels. Force any lib who calls you classist for criticizing US vets to watch this. These mfs were straight up killing their COs. [Watch for free at 1080p here](https://youtu.be/2AOQvFPb7aU?si=Jz8RFdGyLdJMEDr1). Boots Riley wrote the song [*Captain Sterling's Little Problem*](https://youtu.be/FUKUtxtBvMA?si=bsdDaROLX5kbfI7S) for the soundtrack (with Tom Morello), and it remains one of his best tracks.

Finally got around to watching it with my partner last night. The premise is what if you accidentally found a time rift and your dumb friends found out and you get to watch all the different personalities learn how it works in real time. It's a very fun movie with some genuinely impressively planned scifi elements, they squeeze an impressive amount of juice out of the premise. It's done as if it was one continuous single take, but to work that on such a small budget they hired a theatre troupe for the actors. It was a great choice because the timing of everything is so intricate that hitting all the specific cues must have been critical. All the supporting cast are very funny and bring this excited frenetic energy as they're all juggling learning from the future with repeating their future acts in real time for their past selves, all on perfect 2-minute intervals. It all plays out like a wild magic trick. Only 70m long too. Recommend this for a movie night with your friends and you will be cool.
