It's technically feasible in the bare minimum “Got there” sense. Bringing someone and getting them back. But we learned a lot by the moon exploration, and that is that we aren't ready for colonization. Living there, for a long time, let alone indefinitely, that is where the million details are still unresolved. I think that's the problem that is worth tackling. We already know we can live in space for a long time as long as there are continuous shipments of resources from Earth. We could just flood the logistics problem with money and get to mars next year if we wanted to. Other than the psychologically horrifyingly long distances involved, of course.

In ten years? If I had to guess the average life span of live services games I'd say about 18 months. Heavily skewed by the survivors. The shortest lived one only worked for 13 days. Only the very popular ones survive past 5 years and there are a handful of 10 plus. I know it's hard to believe, the average gamer is oblivious to how over saturated the videogames market is. Despite executive's delusions, time and money are actually finite. Not all games can demand all of it, at the same time.

Not to sound like a broken record, but your problem is with late stage capitalism. That said, nostalgia does have a tendency to erase the memories of the bad and preserve only the good parts. There was a lot of shit going on during those years that sucked just as much as things suck today. Gates was raping the tech sector, Microsoft was in the whole EEE model, there were anti-trust lawsuits, Steve Jobs was nothing but drama after drama (Pixar, Apple, worker's suicides in China). ISPs had quickly consolidated into oligopolies that still abuse users today. HP was spying on their own employees. Facebook was a shit show constantly moving from drama to drama as well. Exploding smartphones. Scam biotech companies. Video games in general have always just been shareholder dick size competition that end up hurting the users. Media conglomerates eating each other alive. Blackberry boomed then collapsed. The dot-com bubble bursting. Not to mention millions of dollars scammed out of people during the first days of Bitcoin, endless data breaches, and the beginning of mass surveillance on a global scale.

A lot of awful definitely not fun stuff happened. We just naturally tend to forget about details. Think about this, Android is older than iPhone, is just that Android wasn't on phones. But almost no one remembers that detail because we instead stay with the vibes and feelings.

I actually like it. Less episodes works fine for me as long as good stories are being told. I'm awfully busy, I can't dedicate much time to TV. I actually have the same thing with video games. I'd rather dedicate my time to quality self contained experiences like miniseries, than to drawn out mindless background noise levels of infinite content. I got podcasts, streamers and music to fill the silence. I no longer feel the appeal of 15 seasons of 24 episodes of 40 min each for that.

The curved edges were the precursor tech to having a foldable screen. No matter what is said about the Apple vs. Samsung debate, Samsung is still the one responsible for the praises on Apple's screens. They have tried with other manufacturers and providers but can't escape the fact that Samsung is still the major leader on displays as they dump a shit ton of money on R&D on all LED screen technologies, specially manufacturing at scale. If you want high end screens, you just go with Samsung, period. The alternatives are constantly playing catch up with them and they are actually experimenting and trying to come up with new and original stuff. LG and Sharp are also really good, but their screens aren't as premium as Apple wants them to be, though they are more affordable.

When you know what ancient people did with sinew, it's not that obtuse. We have used bones, cartilage and sinews of animals we killed for a really looooooong time. It comes as a natural thought when you see that when those parts are boiled they become sticky and then harden as they dry. Not a really hard logical leap to make. Just somewhat morbid.

As someone with the opposite problem, too formal and not very good at casual writing. Truth is, formal writing is robotic and in today's context it is regarded as awkward except in a few places. Most of the samples online that the bots are trained with are overly formal examples. 99% of cover letters are never published online, so that's an area they're lacking. What they have access to is the awfully generic slop that's impersonal and meant to sell online workshops about writing cover letters.

There's a very difficult task in making formal writing feel natural and warm. I would advice instead to aim for transparency. A cover letter is supposed to highlight a match between your skills and personality, with the company role's needs and work culture. It's not a cold sales pitch, you must show that you did your due diligence about getting to know the place before applying for the job. As long as it sounds like the genuine you talking, not a façade, it doesn't has to be too formal, just keep the content and vocabulary professional. How you would talk in the workspace with a coworker that you don't know too well yet. A cover letter is more like corporate flirting than lawyer speak.

As for material, read the basic common sense guides online, but, and it is a big but. Also read a lot in general, specially in English as it isn't your first language. Unlike LLMs humans are actually intelligent and we can use experiences from other contexts, and good writing in general shares common principles across all genres. Even if every genre has specificities, they're usually an addendum or exception of general good writing. Variety is the spice of life.

It's incredible how supporting Israel was about "securing an ally in the region to avoid another major armed conflict in the middle east", and has now turned into Israel dragging the US into another major conflict in the middle east. It's either US foreign policy officials didn't learn anything from the past dozen conflicts or they literally want this to happen every time.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/18188737 > Venezuelans are ready to throw off the dictatorship. Will the international community support us? > > By Maria Corina Machado I am writing this from hiding, fearing for my life, my freedom, and that of my fellow countrymen from the dictatorship led by Nicolás Maduro. Mr. Maduro didn’t win the Venezuelan presidential election on Sunday. He lost in a landslide to Edmundo González, 67% to 30%. I know this to be true because I can prove it. I have receipts obtained directly from more than 80% of the nation’s polling stations. We knew that Mr. Maduro’s government was going to cheat. We have known for years what tricks the regime uses, and we are well aware that the National Electoral Council is entirely under its control. It was unthinkable that Mr. Maduro would concede defeat. We Venezuelans have done our duty. We have voted out Mr. Maduro. Now it is up to the international community to decide whether to tolerate a demonstrably illegitimate government. The repression must stop immediately, so that an urgent agreement can take place to facilitate the transition to democracy. I call on those who reject authoritarianism and support democracy to join the Venezuelan people in our noble cause. We won’t rest until we are free.

Después de denunciar un bloqueo en sus servidores, que impidieron transmitir los primeros resultados, la favorita del proceso sumaba 552.430 votos, de 601.010 mil de los que se habían totalizado hasta el momento. I don't mean system files, but your personal and work files. I have been using Mint for a few years, I use Timeshift for system backups, but archived my personal files by hand. This got me curious to see what other people use. When you daily drive Linux what are your preferred tools to keep backups? I have thousands of pictures, family movies, documents, personal PDFs, etc. that I don't want to lose. Some are cloud backed but rather haphazardly. I would like to use a more systematic approach and use a tool that is user friendly and easy to setup and program.
